MILK Premiere

Academy Award-nominated director Gus Van Sant’s ‘MILK’, starring Academy Award winner Sean Penn as gay rights icon Harvey Milk, had its world premiere at San Francisco’s historic Castro Theatre (at 429 Castro Street) last night. The evening benefited multiple charities supporting LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) youth. Dinner and dancing followed at City Hall.

Focus’ Mr. Andrew Karpen, Ms. Jennifer Siebel Newsom, San Francisco Mayor Mr. Gavin Newsom and Focus’ Mr. James Schamus

The city’s mayor, Gavin Newsom, and his wife Jennifer Siebel Newsom were honorary co-chairpersons of the event. All proceeds will benefit the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School, in New York City; Larkin Street Youth Services, in San Francisco; The Point Foundation, the national scholarship-granting organization; and San Francisco’s LGBT Community Center.

The benefit event was held in the city where Harvey Milk (1930-1978) lived, loved, and changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights. ‘MILK’, a biographical drama, was filmed entirely on location in San Francisco earlier this year, including at the Castro movie house itself.

Mr. Milk was an activist and politician, and the first openly gay man to be elected to major public office in America; in 1977, he was voted to the city supervisors’ board of San Francisco, representing the Castro District.

Mr. James Franco

From an original screenplay by Dustin Lance Black, ‘MILK’ is produced by Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, the Academy Award-winning producers of ‘American Beauty’, through The Jinks/Cohen Company. Groundswell Productions and Focus Features co-financed ‘MILK’, which is a Focus Features presentation in association with Axon Films of a Groundswell production and a Jinks/Cohen Company production. Executive producers of ‘MILK’ are Groundswell CEO Michael London (an Academy Award nominee for ‘Sideways’), Mr. Black, Groundswell’s Bruna Papandrea, Barbara Hall, and William Horberg.

‘MILK’ will be distributed worldwide by Focus; the film’s domestic theatrical run commences on Wednesday, November 26th in select cities (including New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco) before expanding in December 2008.

    malakaritis

  • That painful, burning, oozing case of Malakaritis has finally cleared up. That topical triple-antibiotic cream that my doctor prescribed finally did the trick. If I’d known that was all it would take, I would have feigned a sexually transmitted disease weeks ago.
  • Momento–Bebel Gilberto

  • If you are a fan of Bebel Gilberto’s Brazilian-infused music, be on the lookout for the release of her third full album ‘Momento’ on April 24, 2007. I was privileged to receive an advance copy and it’s been in heavy rotation. The eleven tracks on ‘Momento’ show a marked growth of sophistication and artistry and highlight Ms. Gilberto’s talents as a producer/singer/songwriter. Fusing the electronica subtleties of ‘Tanto Tempo’ and the lush acoustic melodies of its follow-up, ‘Momento’ takes sultry and funky to a new level. The album features three covers and eight original compositions. Among the stand-out cuts are the horn-infused ‘Bring Back The Love’, the traditional ‘Cacada’, ‘Night And Day’, ‘Close To You’ and ‘Os Novos Yorkinos’. ‘Memento’ is released on Six Degrees Records.
  • All-American Girl

  • Margaret Cho is one of those people you either love or hate. I’ve always loved her. I find her brutal honesty and brashness refreshing–and she cracks me up. A couple of weeks back, I found out that her short-lived ABC sitcom ‘All-American Girl’ was released on DVD. I’m not sure why I was so surprised, since every network series is suddenly popping up on DVD (and that’s a good thing). I was a fan of the show in its original run and now that I can own the entire series, I’m a happy camper. If you like Ms. Cho (and the delectable Amy Hill), definitely check this one out.
  • Virginia Tech

  • Earlier this week, I wrote a piece entitled ‘VT + TV = !”. It was a hyper-critical analysis of the flabbergasting news media coverage of the horrific tragedy that befell the campus of Virginia Tech. I really struggled with whether or not to post here–probably more than anything I’ve previously written. In the end, I couldn’t. For one thing, I felt it might be interpreted as a slight to the students and families that are struggling with the aftermath of one man’s rampage. For that to have happened, would have pained me to no end. For though I know of no one directly connected to that event, my heart truly aches for the senseless loss of life and the enormity of the pain that these people are trying to process. Secondly, my criticism of the news media outlets (and in particular, the cable news networks) could never properly quantify the despicable tactics and often cruel exploitation of victims that these “news” outlets have undertaken. It apparently is no longer important to just deliver factual and credible news reporting. Instead, crafting drama and speculation in a warped theatre of the absurd has taken its place. It’s simply vile and nauseating.

Mr. Thomas Roberts, ‘Sins of the Father’

One evening of Father Jeff…you know…kissing my ear. The next instances of abuse and how they would graduate would be Father Jeff…uhh…licking the palm of his hand to then…uhm, you know…touch me…and using… using his hand to then masturbate me. Instances after that would then graduate to kissing. Where he would rub his tongue across my teeth….clenched…mine would be clenched…until time after time I relented. This is…I don’t want to…this is really too painful…

—Thomas Roberts to Anderson Cooper on AC360’s ‘Sins of the Father’

On last night’s Anderson Cooper 360 special, “Sins of the Father”, journalist Thomas Roberts shared honestly and openly about the sexual abuse he endured for three years at the hands of Catholic priest, Father Jeff Toohey. Roberts and his family (mother and sister) were all extremely candid in there one-on-one interviews with Cooper. Suddenly, the phrase “the innocence of youth” means so much more when you are exposed to the life-altering pain of sexual abuse at the hands of a trusted adult. The fact that Toohey was an admired priest only makes the situation all the more tragic. This superbly produced one hour program served to highlight a continuing series of injustices and emotional pitfalls that befell Roberts and his hope to put a twenty year chunk of his life in the past and move forward.

As much as I admire Mr. Roberts and was appalled at his ordeal, perhaps the greatest sorrow I felt was for Michael Goles. Goles was not only abused by Father Toohey, but he suffered the abuse of a Baltimore Catholic community’s wrath at coming forward in 1993 to accuse the priest. Not only did no one believe Goles’ claims, the community rallied behind the priest raising money for his defense. Last night, when both Mr. Roberts and Mr. Goles were sitting on the same sofa being interviewed, tears flowed from my eyes.

The fact that neither of these men ever received a semblance of justice is yet another of many crimes. Some people will foolishly try to twist what happened to Roberts and Goles into a story about gay men (both are openly gay) and religious morality. Make no mistake. This is but a cautionary tale about a sexual predator and the crimes he committed upon innocent youth who were supposed to be able to seek console and assistance in their faith–and the man who represented that faith. Men, who indeed, paid a heavy price for the sins of a father.

  • Darkly Dreaming…

    Dexter

In 2004, the character of Dexter Morgan came spilling (literally and figuratively) out of the mind of author Jeff Lindsay. With his novel, ‘Darkly Dreaming Dexter’, Lindsay created one of the most fascinating and arresting characters to prove insight into the mind of a serial-killer. In 2005, Dexter returned in ‘Dearly Devoted Dexter’ and I was completely hooked.

    Mr. Michael C. Hall

When I heard Showtime was developing a drama series based on Lindsay’s character, I was very excited. When I found out the brilliant Michael C. Hall would play Dexter, I was over the moon. Last night, after viewing the second episode of the series (”Crocodile”), I am telling you there is not a more innovative, darkly twisted, superbly written and directed hour of drama on television. Period.

There are not enough superlatives to lavish upon the handsome and talented Mr. Michael C. Hall (who we all fell in love with after his performance as David Fisher in the sorely missed ‘Six Feet Under’). He literally gives life and reason to the character of Dexter Morgan. His performance is so nuanced–from the flinch on an eye to a gesture of the hand–that it is almost mandatory to view each episode twice just to relish every ounce of Mr. Hall’s work. The direction is swift and filled with visual snap and color. The supporting cast and characters are all quite intricate on their own accord. But make no mistake, the show belongs to Dexter and Mr. Hall. Director Michael Cuesta (who wrote, directed and produced the film ‘L.I.E.’) has a background in visual arts and his deft hand on the series speaks to his vast talents. Bottom line: If you haven’t watched ‘Dexter’ yet, you owe it to yourself to get with the program a.s.a.p. Even if your squeamish, there is so much woven into this drama, that you’ll find yourself caught up….hook, line and scalpel. Blood never looked so sexy.

‘Crocodile’ replays throughout the week and episode three (’The Popping Cherry’) premieres on October 15th at 10 p.m. EST on Showtime.

(p.s. ‘Dexter’ has the BEST opening credit sequence on television since ‘Six Feet Under’.)

    Manic Monday

    John Mark Karr

    01. I swore–*absolutely swore*–this weekend that I was going to refuse to mention anything about the whole John Mark Karr debacle. First off, the press (using that term loosely) did nothing but chew up and spit out any dignity they had covering the heinous death of that poor little girl nearly ten years ago. Then when news broke about this decidedly odd-looking possible suspect in her murder, I was once again reminded why I can barely take watchng any newcast or coverage of late. Every channel all weekend long had countless ‘experts’ (criminal psychologists, coroners, handwriting experts, psychics–I kid you not) breathlessly speculating on every detail of this man’s motives, actions, speech, affect, etc. It was simply nauseating.

What made me mention any of this ugly incident at all was that while working on some writing I had CNN on in the background (as I often do) this morning and they broke in with CNN International coverage to show that the plane carrying Karr had made its landing at LAX. I swear it was like O.J. Simpson and that damned Bronco all over again. But what really pushed me over the edge was when they gave a detailed listing of every item Karr ate and drank on his trip from Bangkok. This is a joke right? This is newsworthy? Then they discussed his change of shirt and brushing his teeth. I could not find the remote fast enough to turn off this vile example of ‘journalism’. I was suddenly overcome with the need to shower and the need to re-evaluate my background noise practice.

    BB7

    02. On to something of grave consequences–no, wait. I’m just joshing. However, this is your warning that this is a BB7 House Alert…..definite *SPOILERS* ahead! WARNING! WARNING! (Do you want to know what I ate for dinner?)

The BB7 house is basically teetering on its foundation. Last night’s televised recap showed Howie Gordon getting the unceremonious boot after Mike Booger threatened Chicken George within an inch of his life (more on that in a moment). There are so many cross-alliances in this house, people are forgetting which team they are playing on.

Live feeders have now seen Mike Boogie’s nominations (coming up on Tuesday’s broadcast). Unsurprisingly, the BB Prom Queen once again finds herself on the block with her supposed alliance mate James. The Legion of Doom had plotted that they would win the veto and take James off–thereby clearing the way to evacuate Howie’s partner in short order. Unfortunately, Janelle had other plans. The season seven three-time HOH became a three-time POV winner in a very heated contest involving houseguest dolls (’Mommy! Mommy! I want my Janie doll!). James went ballistic when he claimed big, burly Janelle pushed him and stole a doll right out his dainty hands. He went on such a rant that the other houseguest could hear him screaming in the Diary Room. Threatening lawsuits and demanding producers re-do the competition, James proceeded to call Janelle every name in the book. As it stands now, Janelle will take herself off the block (yet again) forcing Boogie to put up a replacement along side James. While James and Danielle are assured that their LOD cohorts will save James, something wicked is brewing. In a possible key move, Will & Boogie are toying with the idea of sending James out the door and finally taking Janelle on as a secret partner. Unfortunately, Danielle is also suddenly reconsidering her LOD alliance and thinking of making a final two pact with Janelle. Finally, there is much buzz that Boogie’s big mouth may have cost him the coup d’état power as producers became angered by his sharing details of this secret power. This should be a pivotal week in the Big Brother House. If you are not a BB addict, none of this means anything to you–and I apologize for showing my dorkitude in public.

    Freshly Squeezed--Freeloaders

    03. Album You Should Be Listening To:
    ‘Freshly Squeezed’–Freeloaders (iTunes Link)

The Manchester, UK duo of DJ Paul Dering and DJ Glenn Nash are back with their first full album since 2002’s ‘Doubles As A Coaster’. Earlier this year they scored a major hit on dancefloors with a remix of their track “So Much Love To Give”. Now, they’ve dropped a second single from the newly-released album with “Now I’m Free (Freefalling)” which takes the same formula as “SMLTG” and cribs a line from Tom Petty’s “Free Falling” and basically repeats it over a percolating synth and drum track. No, it’s not rocket science, but it sure is a lot of head-bobbing fun. It’s also different in that instead of the standard female diva vocals, much of ‘Freshly Squeezed’ is sung by male vocalists and it’s a nice chage. If you’re a fan of dance/electronica or just need a new soundtrack for your workouts or long commutes, check out the Freeloaders. Key Tracks: “Funky Monkey”, “Electroglide”, “Let Your Love Shine (Down On Me)”, “So Much Love To Give’ and “I Need Love”.

Dr. Brandt Laser Tight: Laser In A Bottle

    04. Beauty Product of the Week: I think we’ve pretty much established that I’m a product whore. It’s a cross I’ll just have to bare. This week, I’m not going to front. This is an expensive one–and certainly not for everyone. Lately, (despite his rather unusual appearance) I’ve been won over by some of the skin care products from physician and dermatologist Dr. Fredric Brandt. For those of you looking to rejuvenate some of the lost elasticity due to aging skin, while tightening and toning–you won’t find a better product on the market that Laser Tight: Laser In A Bottle. The formulation (which contains sweet pea extract, hyaluronic acid, green tea, white tea, and grape seed extract in a patented delivery system called QuSome) mimics the effects of costly laser treatments for problem skin areas. At $110.00 for 1.7 oz., it is definitely an investment. Yet, I can definitely attest to the fact that it pays noticeable dividends. Used a.m. and p.m. on cleansed, dry skin, it is a little bottle of magic. (I also highly recommend Dr. Brandt’s r3p cream and crease release with GABA complex.)

    Prison BreakPrison Break

    05. *PRISON BITCH ALERT*: Don’t forget that those hotties from Fox’s highly successful fall drama ‘Prison Break’ are back tonight. Put the phone on screen, grab some popcorn and a bar of soap and get ready for the prison meat that is Wentworth Miller and Dominic Purcell to break-in to your living room. (I wish!)

Okay, Kids! Have a great one no matter where your day takes you….and remember, I’ll always be your prison bitch. :-)

    The Black Dahlia

    The Black Dahlia

In 1987, James Ellroy released the first book in what would become his L.A. Quartet–a cycle of novels set in 1940’s and 1950’s Hollywood. The Black Dahlia is also the novel that elevated Ellroy’s status from an acclaimed genre writer to a major literary figure. The Black Dahlia is a captivating neo-noir tale that finds its beginnings in the true-life crime and unsolved murder of Elizabeth Short. Dubbed “The Black Dahlia” by the press, Short was a radiant beauty with a reputation of sexual promiscuity. Her body was found disembowled and severed in a vacant lot and her fate would become an obsession for two LAPD officers working the case. Using the basic facts of the crime, Ellroy weaves a stunning tale that builds with incredible tension and understated beauty.

    Aaron Eckhart & Josh Hartnett

On September 15, 2006, director Brian De Palma brings Ellroy’s tale to the big screen in a film the author has descibed as ‘a brilliantly depicted film’ of his novel. ‘The Black Dahlia’ was filmed from a screenplay by Josh Friedman and is fronted by a superlative cast including Josh Hartnett, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Mia Kirshner, Mike Starr and Fiona Shaw.

    Hillary Swank & Josh Hartnett

Master storyteller De Palma weaves a fictionalized tale of obsession, love, corruption, greed and depravity around that brutal murder of a fledgling Hollywood starlet that shocked and fascinated the nation in 1947 and remains unsolved today. Two ex-pugilist cops, Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) and Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett), are called to investigate the homicide of ambitious silver-screen B-lister Betty Ann Short (Mia Kirshner) A.K.A. “The Black Dahlia”–an attack so grisly that images of the killing were kept from the public.

    Josh Hartnett & Scarlett Johansson

While Blanchard’s growing preoccupation with the sensational murder threatens his relationship with Kay (Scarlett Johansson), his partner Bleichert finds himself attracted to the enigmatic Madeleine Linscott (two-time Oscar® winner Hilary Swank), the daughter of one of the city’s most prominent families–who just happens to have an unsavory connection to the murder victim.

True crime meets urban legend when De Palma brings Ellroy’s The Black Dahlia to the big screen. It’s a sumptuously filmed period piece with some great nuanced performances and skillfully paced–but meticulous–direction.

    This one is a must-see.
